Arts patronage and collecting are key components for nurturing a thriving artistic culture in the Middle East. What are the ways in which collections can be promoted through patronage? Without collections and collecting, institutions are empty shells. This panel will engage with the landscape of existing and alternative models, from building institutional collections to private collectors looking to cross over into the public domain. How do a growing market and increasing demand (private, corporate, institutional) affect the practice of both recognised and emerging artists in the region? Should artists themselves have a say in the process? What are the roles of institutions and collections in bringing into the public domain work that would normally be out of the public eye? What is the role of corporate patronage vis-à-vis museum collections?
